In 2002 it was estimated that 2.4 million GP appointments were wasted on the issue of unnecessary sick notes. The University Health Service will not therefore issue sick notes unless specific criteria are met.

Patients who insist upon a sick note outside of this guidance can be provided with a private sick note, but a charge will be payable for this private service.
